Reader's Card
You will need a State Library Gold Reader's Card: Special collections to access the collections at the Mitchell Library. You can apply for a Reader's Card at the Information Desk in the Mitchell Library. When applying for a Reader's Card you are required to show two forms of identification, one of which must show your current address and signature, such as a current driver's licence or passport.
Please note that when you apply for a Reader's Card the State Library will retain a record of your details. This information is collected to enable delivery of Library services, to determine usage of our services and collections and to provide information for and about future improvements. Your personal details will not be provided to any other individual or organisation.
Access
Manuscript and Pictures collections are viewed in the Secure Reading Area of the Mitchell Library. Where collections have been copied it is the Library's policy to issue the copy rather than the original.
Oral history and other sound recordings can be accessed in the Mitchell Library Reading Room. Logs and transcriptions are also available. Only research copies of the master tapes may be issued. Where there are no copies it is possible, on request, to have these made.
Note that the collections are indexed in both the computer catalogue (PICMAN) and in the card catalogues in the Mitchell Library Reading Rooms. For a brief guide on using the Manuscript catalogues and collections see Getting started: Manuscript research.
